Landscape Obscured - Gold at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

Landscape Obscured was awarded a Gold Medal and ‘Best Conceptual’ Garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2011.

Landscape Obscured explores our relationship with Earth and the impact of growing consumption on its precious resources. From a distance, steel structures of varying heights surround a square of showground grass.  Upon closer inspection the steel structures – periscopes – reveal a hidden subterranean landscape created from mushrooms, liverworts, and moss.

Six different varieties of organically grown fungi – Shiitake, Oyster, Pom Pom, Shimeji, Nameko, and Eryngii – grow rapidly throughout the show, creating a constantly evolving landscape and, on the final day, these were harvested, cooked, and eaten.

During the show, a concealed time-lapse camera was placed underground to capture images of a rapidly changing fungus landscape. These photos have been transformed into a unique short film, soundtrack composed and produced by Box Projects.
