Client was keen to create a water garden desigs not only to help ease drainage issues but more interestingly, to support a whole host of flora and fauna they wanted to encourage into their garden.
We constructed a lake on an original watercourse by diverting a small stream thus guaranteeing a diverse ecological system from the offset. Rain water was used to create the finished water levels of the lake safeguarding its ecological balance by ensuring unnecessary chemicals were kept out of the lake altogether. The banks of the lake were graduated creating shelves allowing for different tiers of planting from marginal plants such as Iris versicolor and Juncus inflexus to deep aquatic plants like water lilies. We worked closely with pond specialists who advised on the type and mix of plants to include within the lake to create a truly diverse ecosystem. We have since revisited the now thriving lake to install a wooden boardwalk, which leads to a small jetty on the water’s edge creating a beautiful and unique spot to sit.
The lake has become a haven for wildlife from Damselflies and Newts to Herons and Coots.
