Shere Village Open Gardens
On Sunday 28th June, Shere, one of the most picturesque villages in Surrey, nestling at the foot of the North Downs between Guildford and Dorking, will inviting the public to view the biggest selection of beautiful private gardens that Shere Open Gardens event has ever offered to help raise funds for village causes.
Whether you are a keen gardener or simply curious to see behind the lichen covered walls and manicured hedges, Shere Open Gardens gives a glimpse into quintessential England. Enjoy an afternoon strolling about 26 gardens, from sheltered courtyards full of spectacular flowering pots and containers or classic colourful cottage gardens festooned with roses, poppies and lupins in the heart of the village, to a great selection of larger elegantly landscaped gardens with sculptured planting and verdant lawns, just beyond.
The Tillingbourne river that meanders through the village and makes its presence in many of the gardens either as a backdrop or the focal point. Stream Cottage is open for the first time this year and there are two spectacular water gardens to be visited at The Old Netley Mill and Netley Mill House. There will be an over-the-wall gardeners’ question time at the Shere allotments, a Pimms Stall and homemade teas in the village hall.
Says Annabel Alford, the chairman of the organising committee: ” The variety of gardens on offer together with their close proximity to each other contribute to the success of Shere Open Gardens, but this year we also have the local WASP community bus helping transport visitors to the gardens on the edge of the village”.
Shere Open Gardens started in 1978 with the intention of raising money for the village hall which was in desperate need of repair. It proved so popular that it quickly became an annual event in the village’s calendar and in this, the 37th year of Shere Open Gardens, the residents once again looks forward to welcoming visitors come rain or shine.

Entry: Adults: £6; Over 60: £5; Children under 16: FREE. Tickets are available at the village hall and selected gardens, ask parking attendants for the nearest point.
